Andrew Shim

Daegu International School ‘24

Andrew Shim is a senior at Daegu International School. He has a great interest in biochemistry and public health. He demonstrates his interests by conducting research on topics that are controversial in areas in biology, chemistry, and public health. Throughout his high school career, he also enjoyed volunteering and helping others by participating in clubs and in-person events that are devoted to community service. He seeks to pursue his value that has been established since he was young: helping out the community and people as a whole. As Head of Writing Department of JES, he hopes to support the writers as best as he can such that both the writers and the editors would improve together to deliver quality science writing to the public.

Hyerin Shin is a sophomore at Korea International School Jeju with a deep interest in health and medicine. She deepened the understanding of her passion through participation in the Global Health Leaders Conference (GHLC) hosted by Johns Hopkins University. By co-founding and being the secretary of the Medical Club in KISJ, she also assists other students in their pursuit of scientific knowledge. Besides medicine, she is passionate about computer science and programming. As a Chief Editor at JES, Hyerin seeks to help students explore their interests in STEM freely.

Hyojung(Alex) Han is a junior in Korea International School Jeju. He had ‘some’ interest in the field of biology and developed the interest as he entered highschool life. After joining KSCY, which is a research camp that was held in Yonsei University, he determined himself to study especially on bio molecular science. He has not yet broadened any extracurricular activities related to biology, but his journey is just the beginning. In his freshman and sophomore year, he joined the chemistry club to deepen his knowledge of science. Through joining as a member, an associate editor, in JES, I definitely want to support students to produce better articles that can deliver their knowledge.

Ella (Seonghoon) Kim

Daegu International School '24

Ella Kim, a senior at Daegu International School, leads several divisions of writing department of JES. She is in charge of keeping track of the writing progress and ensuring that all the articles are relevant to the general pursuit of JES. With JES, she is looking forward to diving deeper into science and showing her passion in many aspects of science. She hopes to establish a platform that provides opportunities for high school students to publish their own work and show their interest in science.

James (Kyunghwan) Roh

Saint Johnsbury Academy Jeju ‘25

Kyunghwan Roh is a sophomore at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju and is greatly interested in biotechnology. He started to be interested in biotechnology after learning about Vivo therapy using CRISPR–Cas9 as he entered high school. And soon, he gained tremendous knowledge and experience by participating in the 2022 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, taking various roles in the team, and applying synthetic biology to real life. Furthermore, using his high level of mathematical skills, he is leading the Statistics club in SJA, collecting and analyzing various statistical models in SJA. Besides academics, he likes to learn various languages. Including 400+ streaks in Duolingo Spanish, he can speak 4 languages fluently. As a Chief Editor, Kyunghwan(James) is willing to dedicate himself to creating better articles and helping students in JES.

Saint Johnsbury Academy Jeju ‘25

Dong Yoon Lee (Daniel) is a sophomore and has been attending St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju since 2017. Since he was a child, he has been interested in medical studies and wanted to be a doctor. After encountering medical content such as Good Doctor and Severe Trauma Center: Golden Hour (중증외상센터 : 골든 아워), he now dreams of being a surgeon saving lives. At his school, he has been participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) since when he was in 6th grade and has participated in a total of seven conferences. In his MUN experience, he learned about major events worldwide and how to negotiate with others. He is now looking to work as a secretariat in BHA MUN as well as establish conferences at his school. Furthermore, he is working at the Center of Academic Excellence in his school to help other middle and high school students academically. As an Associate Editor, Dong Yoon Lee (Daniel) is willing to cooperate with members to produce a high-quality article.

Anika (Dongha) Kim

Korea International School Jeju ‘25

Anika Kim is a sophomore at Korea International School Jeju, known for her bright personality and willingness to help others. After her 3 years of residence in the Philippines, Anika has gained a deep passion for exploring undiscovered aspects of the world, as shown by her leadership as the Marketing and Design Officer in international education programs including Abcede. Anika is also a talented speaker and a natural leader, and is the Secretary-General for JejuMUN X, and is also a High School Student Council Officer. Anika has shown not only great leadership skills but also her willingness to collaborate with others during her participation in the Cambridge CCISTC Medical Research Program, in which she collaborated with other emerging scientists to draft a literature review on the relationship between Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and human T cells. As the Resource Manager and Associate Editor-In-Chief of JES, Anika wishes to be able to utilize her various skills and abilities for the better good of the organization and help expand the JES community through her active, outgoing personality.

Branksome Hall Asia ‘24

Yunhwa Lee is a senior student at Branksome Hall Asia with a strong interest in medicine and biochemistry.  Since she was a child, she thought that being a doctor, a profession that saves lives, was cool and that she wanted to become one when she grew up. During her residence in New Zealand for 3 years,  she got into science by deer dissection and hoped to do research on biomedical science in the future. She is trying various experiences to expand her scientific knowledge. She was a writer in the Journal of Emerging Scientists (JES) and now serves as chief editor. She is a member of Red Cross Youth and leads a project to design and create science lab kits for the BHA community. Besides science, she loves animals, especially dogs. She is the leader of Support Wild Animal Protection, which is dedicated to helping the growing number of abandoned dogs these days. As a Chief Editor of JES, she wants to help the JES community with her best.

Sankeeth Udayakumar

Daegu International School ‘26

Sankeeth Udayakumar, a freshman at Daegu International School, has always found himself an aficionado of neurology and medicine. He has shown great passion and interest in the therapeutic methods that have been adopted during the recent years with the on-going pandemic. Sankeeth is in the process of submitting various articles to the International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA) and the Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review. He has also undergone a set of pre-med courses hosted by the Harvard Student Agencies, Harvard University on pursuing a path in the medical field. Sankeeth, as an avid fan of public speaking, joined his school’s chapter of Model United Nations and participated in the Southern Korean Activities Conference MUN. He also took part in the STEM competition at both his school and at the SKAC-hosted STEM fair multiple times. Yearning to spread his knowledge to his fellow peers at his school, he became a member of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS), a participant in the events hosted by the Emerging Medical Students Association (EMSA), and was elected as the Vice President of the Korea International Synthetic Biology Cooperative (KISBC) at his school’s chapter. Through his position as an associate editor for the Journal of Emerging Scientists (JES), Sankeeth wishes to help aid in the publication of top-quality scientific articles for JES.
